Dr. Richard Baltzan made Officer of the Order of Canada

Dr. Richard Baltzan has been made an Officer of the Order of Canada. The announcement was made on June 30, 2010 by the Governor General’s office in Ottawa. We know him best for his work in Internal Medicine and for his contributions to the advancement of nephrology in Canada.

He is also recognized for his extensive service and leadership with medical organizations on a local, provincial and national level (see below). The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavor. It is our country’s highest civilian honor for lifetime achievement.

The three different levels of membership - Companion, Officer and Member - honor people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope.

Congratulations Dr. Baltzan!

This honor addresses the notion of "lifetime achievement". Dr. Baltzan is quiet about these achievements; therefore many of us at SPH might not have any idea of what they might be. Here are some of the ways in which he has served during his career, in addition to his clinical practice. The positions he has held reflect the recognition his peers have of his competence, hard work and generosity.
