Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Services
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine strives to provide easy access to routine and specialized laboratory diagnostic testing. We have a dedicated team of over 400 staff making up a network of collection, transportation, laboratory technology, information technology and analytic expertise.
We work together with both community and acute health care providers to deliver better care for patients. The laboratory ensures accurate and timely results enabling health care professionals to assess patient needs and identify effective treatment options.
On any given day, as many as 4,200 specimens pass through the High Volume Laboratory at St. Paul’s Hospital. St. Paul’s performs testing and specimen analysis for all Health Region patients (and some outside the Region), in the areas of Anatomical Pathology, Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Hematology and Transfusion Medicine.
The technology and equipment in the St. Paul's Hospital Laboratory is complex and the knowledge and skills of staff are called upon daily to test and interpret results prior to verification. Each test performed represents a patient who is waiting for results. Accuracy and quality are crucial; therefore, the Lab is focused on continuous improvement to ensure the best possible patient care.
