Community Events Support St. Paul's Hospital Foundation

From the Fall 2024 Spirit Newsletter

Women in White YXE Gala (Pictured)

Spearheaded by Rhonda Vogelgesang, the Women in White YXE Gala was held on June 20th, 2024. Rhonda was inspired by similar events she had attended in larger cities, and worked alongside 2024 co- chair Carmen Rosman to bring a parallel experience to the women of Saskatoon. In this third year of hosting the event, Women in White YXE generously committed the proceeds to the Hospice at Glengarda, ultimately raising $15,816.47 for the Comfort Care Fund. Rhonda credits the Hospice for creating a beautiful and supportive environment for her mother before her passing, and knew that the event could be a perfect fit to raise support and awareness for a place that has been so comforting to so many.

An Intimate Evening with the Oucharek Quartet

An Intimate Evening with the Oucharek Quartet was hosted on September 28th, 2024 at Emmanuel Anglican Church and featured Dr. Evan Barber (Thoracic Surgeon) and Dr. Luke Hnenny (Neurosurgeon, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, and Founder and Director of the SK Skull Base Surgery Program) on violin, Dr. Peter Hedlin (Assistant Professor and Clinical Scientist Anesthesiology) on cello, and Mr. Geoff Cole on viola. Adding a further layer of meaning, the Quartet played instruments handcrafted by Dr. Kunal Jana’s father-in-law, Walter Oucharek. It was Dr. Jana, a urologist at SPH’s Leslie and Irene Dubé Urology Center of Health, who spearheaded and sponsored the event. SPH Foundation is sincerely grateful to Dr. Jana for his thoughtfulness and generosity. All proceeds from the event will support the 2024 Prostate Cancer Symposium: Survive & Thrive, which will be held on November 9th, 2024. For more than a decade, the staff and physicians at the Leslie and Irene Dubé Urology Centre of Health have been hosting the annual Symposium, providing accessible leading-edge education and bringing hope and community to those living with a diagnosis of prostate cancer, as well as to their caregivers, family members, and clinicians. The event remains free of cost because of the generosity of our community, including our donors and the Oucharek Quartet performers.

Ahmadiyya Youth Run for Saskatoon

Each year, Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) hosts their annual Run for Saskatoon charity run. AMYA organizes charity runs across Canada, and the 2024 Run for Saskatoon event marked the fourth year that the group has hosted a run in Saskatoon. Very generously, AMYA has selected St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation as the recipient for the funds raised from their runs. The 2023 Run for Saskatoon event raised $10,234.16 for the area of greatest need at the Hospital, with proceeds from the September 29th, 2024 run also benefitting St. Paul’s. The group has pledged to raise $100,000 for the Hospital over ten years, committing to provide invaluable support for our community for years to come.

Second Annual Graham Nicholson Golf Tournament

On June 14th, 2024, family and friends of Graham Nicholson and supporters of the Hospice at Glengarda gathered for the second annual Graham Nicholson Memorial Golf Tournament. Graham was just 49 years old when he passed away at the Hospice at Glengarda on April 15th, 2022. Though his time in the facility was short, it was very meaningful for his young family during a very difficult time. Graham’s wife, Tannis, and brother-in-law, Tyler, wanted to ensure that other families navigating a loved one’s end-of-life journey could access the same resources they did, and were inspired to honour Graham’s legacy by supporting the Hospice at Glengarda and raising awareness about Hospice care. The remarkable $37,869.03 raised was dedicated to the Hospice’s Comfort Care Fund.
